The Student Union of the University of Helsinki is a corporation subject to public law, which currently has approximately 30,000 members. HYY provides its members with services, interest representation and various membership benefits. The Representative Council of 60 members is the highest decision-making body in the Student Union.

Approximately 250 various subject, hobby and interest organisations, international organisations and student nations operate within HYY. This section describes the organisations and the services and benefits provided for the organisations.
Organisational services are handled by the Student Union's Office Secretary Tiina Kääriä, Specialist for Organisational Affairs Akseli Huhtanen and the Board Member in charge of organisational affairs Lauramaija Hurme.
