More equal organisations = happier members!

Taking equality into account is important in organisational activities, because the members of organisations are not alike. Taking diversity into account in the organisation’s activities ensures that everyone can participate in them. And only if the organisation feels like a place where you can be yourself, will members be prepared to work for common goals.

We want to encourage organisations operating under HYY to take the promotion of equality as a part of their everyday practices. This year, we are going to hand out certificates of honour to organisations that:
1) draft the organisation’s first equality plan,
2) select a person in charge of equality for the organisation, or
3) perform some other noteworthy act to promote equality in their activities.

If your organisation already is on top of the basics (has an equality plan and a person in charge of equality), you can still receive the certificate by performing some other noteworthy act to promote equality in your activities.
Let us know of your organisation, and the certificate of honour as well as a prize worth around 20 euros is waiting for your organisation! For further information and contacts: Lauri Linna, member of HYY’s Board, lauri.linna@hyy.fi, 050 595 0324.

How to make an organisation’s activities transparent?

Transparency is a prerequisite for organisations’ activities to develop and grow. Transparency helps new actors to both get in the organisation more easily and influence the organisation’s activities. HYY’s Organisation Wiki contains ideas for how to make an organisation’s activities transparent! (Currently only in Finnish.)

Would you like to get ideas for advancing equality in your organisation?

Join us for a meeting of organisational actors interested in equality!

The persons in charge of equality in organisations as well as all other organisational actors interested in the theme are welcome to attend. The meeting is aimed at sharing ideas and experiences and meeting other organisational actors wrestling with the same issues.

Worried about a friend or family?

Together with the Finnish Association for Mental Health HYY and Nyyti ry offer a course in Mental First Aid for students active in organisations. The course, which is free of charge, is held on Oct 7-8 and it doesn't require any previous knowledge. Unfortunately the course language and its materials are all in Finnish. Let us know if there is demand for this kind of course also in English!

Organisation Contests 2017 & Organisation Heroes

Organisation Contests, organised by Student Organisations Committee are here again! This year we are looking for winners in seven different contests and for Organisation Heroes.

Organisation Paper Contest

The search for the best organisation paper has begun again! Will it be your paper this year? Find out by participating in the Organisation paper contest organised by HYY’s Student Organisations Committee. You can participate in the contest by filling in the Organisation contests 2017 google form and delivering us one printed or digital issue of the paper from 2017. Printed papers along with a cover letter should be delivered to HYY’s Central Office, with ‘HYY’s Student Organisations Committee / Organisation paper contest’ marked on the envelope as the recipient. Digital material, on the other hand, is delivered to the email address of the Student Organisations Committee (jarjestovaliokunta@hyy.fi) along with a cover letter. The cover letter must include the name of the organisation publishing the paper and the name, email address and phone number of the paper’s contact person. Sent material will not be returned.

0Deadline for taking part in the contest is on 30 October at 3 pm. Late submissions will not be considered.

The winner of the contest is selected by a panel assembled for the contest. The panel selects the winner based only on the paper submitted to the contest – any additional material will not be taken into account. The members of the panel are revealed in connection with announcing the winner. The winner will be awarded 100 euros.

For further information, please contact jarjestovaliokunta@hyy.fi or jane.karna@helsinki.fi (Chair of the Committee).

You can take part in the contest by filling in the Organisation contests 2017 google form and sending either the badge or a sketch of it to the Student Organisations Committee. Physical badges are sent to HYY’s Central Office in an envelope along with a cover letter, with ‘HYY’s Student Organisations Committee / Overall badge contest’ marked on the envelope as the recipient. Sketches, on the other hand, are sent by email to jarjestovaliokunta@hyy.fi in either JPG or PDF format. Please attach a cover letter that includes the name of the organisation and the name, email address and phone number of the contact person to the badge or draft. You may also include a short, free-form description of the badge in the cover letter. Sent material will not be returned.

Deadline for participating in the contest is on 6 November at 3 pm. Late submissions will not be considered.

The winner of the contest is selected by HYY’s Student Organisations Committee. The winner will be awarded 100 euros.

All organisations that operate under HYY may participate in the contest. It is also desirable to deliver some sort of recording of the song being performed.

Contest entries may be sent either via email to jarjestovaliokunta@hyy.fi or, alternatively, on a cd in an envelope to HYY’s Central Office during its opening hours, with ‘HYY’s Committee for Organisational Affairs / Sitsi song’ marked on the envelope as the recipient.

You can take part in the contest by filling in the Organisation contests 2017 google form and delivering a description of the cooperation by email to jarjestovaliokunta@hyy.fi or, alternatively, physically to HYY’s Services Office during its opening hours, with ‘HYY’s Student Organisations Committee / Cooperation contest’ marked on the envelope as the recipient. HYY’s Studies Committee wants to encourage organisations to advocacy work and concrete acts aimed at improving studying conditions. This is why the committee declares open the Advocacy Act of the Year contest.

You can participate in the contest with acts related to studies, educational policy and advocacy work.

Did you organise a study circle, come up with a new way of collecting student feedback or offer the decision-makers sticks and carrots?

Tell us all about it! You can participate in the contest by filling in the Organisation contests 2017 google form and delivering a free-form report or presentation of the event by email to mathilda.timmer(a)helsinki.fi, with ‘Advocacy Act contest’ and your organisation’s name as the subject of the email. The description should include the names of the participating organisations, the contact persons and the type of the event as well as when and where it was organised.

Alternatively, you can deliver descriptions printed on paper, along with a cover letter, to HYY’s Central Office, with ‘HYY’s Studies Committee / Advocacy Act’ marked on the envelope as the recipient.

Acts that have occurred during 2017 by the deadline of the contest will be accepted in the contest.

The winner of the contest is selected by HYY’s Studies Committee.
Deadline for participating in the contest is on 6 November at 3 pm. Late submissions will not be considered.
The winner will be awarded 100 euros. For further information, please contact Mathilda Timmer at mathilda.timmer(a)helsinki.fi.

Most Environmentally Friendly Sitsit of the Year

Does your organisation create wonderfully cheerful sitsit that are also organised with environmental values in mind? Do you sometimes yearn for glory and recognition – and why not money, too?
The time has come to fulfil your heart’s desire! This year, HYY’s Environmental Committee organises an organisation contest looking for the most wicked environmental sitsit. Our panel will pick out the best from among the competitors based on how well recycling, the food’s climate impact and food waste as well as the lack of unnecessary odds and ends at the sitsit have been taken into account. By taking pictures of your recycling, food and fully decorated party premises, your chances of winning are even higher!

Taking part in the contest is simple: fill in the Organisation contests 2017 google form and deliver a free-form report or description of your successful environmental sitsit to julia.hamalainen(at)helsinki.fi by 3 pm on 6 November. The description should include the participating organisation(s), the contact persons and the date and location of the event. Late submissions will not be considered.

The winner will be awarded 100 euros and a gift card to an organic food store.
For further information, please contact julia.hamalainen(at)helsinki.fi.

Organisation Heroes

Do you know of an organisational actor whose massive amount of work, positive attitude or unbelievable innovativeness you have always admired? Or possibly someone without whom your organisation’s crucially necessary rule change would have remained unfinished forever, your list of members would be a mishmash of lost papers or premises would always be left messy after you use them, with others running to catch the last bus, for instance? For these or any other reasons, you can now let us know of an organisation hero so that they get the recognition they deserve for their work! Many small and even large acts and input given to organisations often go unrecognised. Organisation heroes 2017 makes it possible for anyone to inform us about an organisation hero who deserves recognition. This can be done through the Organisation heroes 2017 google form, where you can fill in the information of both the hero and the person letting us know about them as well as the justifications for the recognition. After the form has been filled, an email confirmation will be sent to you. You can let us know about an organisation hero either by yourself or as a group, or even with everyone from your organisation. The hero’s merits may be either from this year alone or from a longer period of time.

Deadline for informing us about heroes is on 6 November at 3 pm. Organisation heroes will be published in a manner announced later.
For further information, please contact jarjestovaliokunta@hyy.fi or jane.karna@helsinki.fi (Chair of the Committee).
