Opening Carnival on Monday, 5 September

The Student Union of the University of Helsinki celebrates the festive Opening Carnival in connection with the Opening of the Academic Year on Monday, 5 September, from 2pm to 6pm. The Main Building and Porthania will be filled with music, dancing, singing and performances when the University, the Student Union, student nations, subject associations and interest clubs will present themselves to the new and old students. The carnival will also take over the streets in front of the Main Building and Porthania, which will be filled with diverse and surprising events.

In addition to the carnival, students are also welcome to attend the Opening of the Academic Year in the University’s Great Hall (entrance: Aleksanterinkatu 5) at 12noon on the opening day and the opening mass in Helsinki Cathedral after the opening ceremony. According to the Rector’s decision, there are no lectures in the afternoon of the opening day and therefore all university students and staff members can participate both in the Opening Ceremony and the Opening Carnival. After the carnival, the evening will continue with the Opening Party at the Old Student House where the partygoers will be entertained by Don Johnson Big Band (more information below).
