The nomination of candidates for the Representative Council elections of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY) ended today on Monday at 12noon. By the deadline, 635 candidate nomination forms were delivered to HYY. The number of candidates in the Representative Council elections is therefore slightly higher than in the previous Representative Council elections in the year of 2012, when there were 627 candidates. This time, 11 groups participate in the elections. HYY's Central Election Committee will confirm the candidates at its meeting on 8 Oct.
With its 145 candidates, Osakuntalainen vaalirengas (electoral alliance of the Student Nations) once again has the most candidates. However, the number of candidates in Osakuntalainen vaalirengas decreased significantly from the previous elections, when the group had 191 candidates. Other major independent groups increased their number of candidates: HYAL+Tsemppi group (subject organisations and international students) now have 127 candidates (2012: 107), HELP (students of dentistry, medicine and law) has 106 candidates (2012: 91) and SNÄf, the Swedish subject organisation and student nations, has 36 candidates (2012: 25).
Now the elections also include a new independent group, Maltilliset. They have ten candidates and all of them are students at the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Of the political groups, Sosiaalidemokraattiset opiskelijat – OSY increased its number of candidates significantly: it had 31 candidates in 2012 and now it has 54 candidates. Maailmanpyörä electoral alliance of HYYn Vihreät (The Greens) and Independent Left now has hundred candidates (2012: 99). The number of candidates in the right-wing groups is significantly smaller than in the previous elections: Edistykselliset alliance formed by Kokoomusopiskelijat and Keskeiset has 43 candidates, when it had a total of 67 candidates in the previous elections. Perussuomalaiset have eight candidates, Piraatit have 4 and Liberaalit have 2 candidates.
- It is great that students are still interested in having influence and we also have a new group in the elections. Sosiaalidemokraattiset had a major increase in the number of candidates, and
Vasemmisto and Vihreät continue to be strong. The number of the right-wing candidates, however, decreased for the fourth time in a row. Sitoutumattomat are still clearly one of the largest groups at least based on their number of candidates, comments HYY's Secretary General Katri Korolainen.
HYY's Representative Council elections will be held on 4-5 Nov. HYY's highest decision-making body, the Representative Council of 60 members, is elected in the elections. All the student union members, approximately 28,000 students of the University of Helsinki, are entitled to vote. The Representative Council decides on the Student Union's major financial policies, rules, as well as the selling and purchasing of properties, among other things. The Representative Council elects the Student Union's Secretary General and the Chief Editor of Ylioppilaslehti. The new Representative Council will begin its work on 1 Dec 2014.
You can use your right to vote at a total of 14 polling stations on the four campuses of the University of Helsinki and the offices of the University of Helsinki in Lahti and Vaasa. The election results will be revealed in the election night party at Virgin Oil restaurant at the New Student House
(Mannerheimintie 5) late on Wednesday evening, 5 November. HYY's Central Election Committee will confirm the election results when the election audit committee has completed its count on 13 Nov 2014.
