Benh Zeitlin's directorial debut Beasts of The Southern Wild battles against all that is modern, decent and safe. Its tenderly furious idyll of people who live beyond the civilisation in harmony with nature is located outside the floodgates in the Southern Louisiana. There are so many crabs as you can eat, home distilleries in every shack, and in the centre of all that adventures the 6-year-old curly-haired Hushpuppy. Moral preaching concerning the self-sufficient community is combined with raging merrymaking and the little child's imagination with harsh reality, in a primitively engaging way.
Beasts of The Southern Wild has been awarded with Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival and Golden Camera Prize granted for the best debutant director at Cannes Film Festival. In Finland, the film has only been screened as the opening film of Love & Anarchy festival, which was instantly sold out.
