The Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY) voted in its meeting on 15 Dec 2011 M.A. Esa Perkiö as the chairperson of the Student Union. In 2011, Perkiö acted as HYY’s first vice chairperson. Perkiö also acted as the chairperson of the Student Union Board in 2000 and the chairperson of the National Union of University Students in Finland in 2011. In addition, Perkiö acted as the member of the University’s Consistery and HYY’s Board Member in charge of academic affairs in 1999.
Currently, Perkiö works at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences of the University of Helsinki as PhD researcher and teacher. Esa Perkiö is also known as an active non-governmental actor and a participant in social debate.
M.Soc.Sc Reima Launonen was appointed as the first vice chair of the Student Union and M.Soc.Sc Arto Aniluoto as the second vice chair.
The Student Union of the University of Helsinki was founded in 1868 and it is the oldest and largest student union in Finland. It consists of approximately 28,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students Of the University of Helsinki. The Representative Council of 60 members is the highest decision-making body in the Student Union. HYY’s chairperson leads the Representative Council meetings and acts as the representative of the Student Union. The board is led by the chairperson of the board.
