HYY’s Anniversary Weeks begin - come and celebrate on 19–28 Nov!

Monday, 26 Nov, is HYY's 144th anniversary, and the birthday is again celebrated in the form of the anniversary weeks. Ten days are packed with diverse cultural and other events, and HYY's members have always either free or very inexpensive admission to them. Below are a few highlights of the events, after which the entire programme of the anniversary weeks is presented. Welcome to celebrate the 144-year-old student union!

 

The anniversary weeks open with the Student Theatre's flash mob on Centre Campus on 19 Nov and the Student Theatre also offers HYY's members a group discount on Give Me Back My Son! performance during the anniversary weeks. The anniversary week club is held on Wednesday, 21 Nov, when one of the most acclaimed newcomers of the year, the French-Finnish Eva & Manu (picture above) performs at Cafe Vanha. Fresh French films are screened on Friday, 23 Nov and Tuesday, 27 Nov, when HYY offers its members the free screenings of the films 2 Days in New York and Rust and Bone. The anniversary weeks end on Wednesday, 28 Nov, with Art for Us! event day in Ateneum, which offers interesting programme and free admission to 52 Souls exhibition, including a wide selection of the masters of world art. HYY's 144th anniversary is celebrated on Monday, 26 Nov, and other events include the closing of World Student Capital year, pub quiz at Cafe Vanha, art-historical Open HYY tour and plenty of events produced by various organisations, ranging from a soap course to a language cafe and from a table hockey tournament to a debate night. MONDAY, 19 NOV

The Student Theatre's flash mob on the Centre Campus. The anniversary weeks are opened by the Student Theatre's flash mob, which presents the events of the anniversary weeks to university students in the main building of the university at 12noon and at Porthania at 2pm.

 

TUESDAY, 20 NOV

Closing of World Student Capital year. In the closing event of World Student Capital project in Mannerheim Hall at the New Student House at 3pm-5pm, the achieved concrete solutions for the students' challenges are presented in a relaxed atmosphere. We also brainstorm ideas on how to continue to make the metropolitan area the world's best student metropolis. Macondo's mythbusting and language cafe. At Think Corner (Aleksanterinkatu 7), the students of Latin American Studies organise mythbusting at 12.15pm, where they reveal and mercilessly shoot down perceptions and assumptions related to the Latin America. After that, at 6.15pm, ¡Lupa hablata! language cafe mixes Spanish and Finnish. You do not have to have fluent language skills or manage the subtleties of the gramática in order to participate.

Soap course of Hyvät Martat. The soap course of Hyvät Martat at 6pm-8pm at Alexander room in Domus Gaudium (Leppäsuonkatu 11). We make 2-4 bars of soap, depending on the size of the mold. You can add essential oils to bring fragrance and colour, and you can also bring your favourite perfume for fragrance. The course fee is €10 (including material and instructions), and the course is filled in the order of registration. Please sign up no later than 16 Nov at hyvat.martat (at) gmail.com. Debating Society's debate night. The topic of the English debate night organised by the University of Helsinki Debating Society is “Students should be banned from consuming caffeine”. The night is organised in the meeting room Cajsa at the New Student House (Staircase B, 3rd floor) from 6.30pm onwards, where you can follow the debate of experienced debaters, after which all those who are present may choose to participate in the discussion. The event does now require preparation or background information.

Academic Wind Orchestra concert. The autumn season of Academic Wind Orchestra will culminate in an international atmosphere at Orient & Occident concert at Meilahti Church (Pihlajatie 16) at 7pm. The concert is led by Orchestra Conductor Kalervo Kulmala, and the soloist is the saxophone superstar Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo, who interprets the rarely heard Gunaropulos saxophone concerto. Free admission, programme €15/8.

Short theatre of Thespians Anonymous at FELT IF festival. Thespians Anonymous Theatrical Society is a co-organiser in the fourth Festival of English Language Theatre in Finland (FELT IF) at Kaapelitehdas on 20-25 Nov. Every night, there are several short theatre performances of Thespians Anonymous and other English theatre groups in Helsinki on Tue-Fri, from 7pm onwards, and Sat-Sun, from 2pm and 5.20pm onwards. WEDNESDAY, 21 NOV

The anniversary week club at Cafe Vanha. Each year, the anniversary week club has presented upcoming names. This year's club at Cafe Vanha is starred by the French-Finnish Eva & Manu from 8pm onwards. The band plays folk pop and released its debut album this summer and instantly was ranked among the most promising domestic artists in the upcomer voting of Rumba and YleX. Free admission – come to Vanha and enjoy good live and record music!

Dance rehearsal for HYY's anniversary. If you don't remember the dance steps of academic dances, you can refresh your memory for HYY's anniversary in the dance rehearsal organised in Mannerheim Hall of the New Student House from 5pm onwards.

The Student Theatre's Give Me Back My Son! performance. The Student Theatre's comic performance reaches towards profoundness in a light way. The majority of people use most of their lives reaching for a kidnapped, missing or lost son. Whether the son is real, fictional, religious, artistic, conscious, subconscious or a political person, object or energy, we are reaching for it – and for some reason, in most cases it is a boy, not a girl. Student tickets €5. In addition, the Student Theatre offers HYY's members a group discount in the honour of the anniversary weeks for the performances between 21–25 Nov: 5-person groups €4/person and 8-person groups €3/person. THURSDAY, 22 NOV

The art-historical Open HYY tour. HYY opens the secrets of the student houses in a one-hour long art-historical walking tour, during which we get to know the architecture of the Old Student House and the remote corners of the New Student House, which are rarely open. Starting at 4pm in the lobby of the Old Student House (in Finnish).

Pub quiz at Cafe Vanha. The new pub quiz at Cafe Vanha includes pictures, audio, video and plenty of good vibes. You can even win a holiday to Paris for four people. Pub quiz at Cafe Vanha every Thursday from 7pm onwards – also during the anniversary weeks.

Shorinji Kempo's open rehearsals. Shorinji Kempo of the University of Helsinki organises public rehearsals at Unisport Töölö dojo (Pohjoinen Hesperiankatu 25), 5.30pm-7pm.You only need sweat pants or other exercise equipment or you can just come and watch the rehearsals. Welcome to try self-defense in the academic company!

FRIDAY, 23 NOV

Film screening: 2 Days in New York. In the honour of the anniversary weeks, HYY offers its members two free screenings of recent French films at Kino Engel (Sofiankatu 4). The first one is Julie Delpy's 2 Days in New York, starring Delpy and Chris Rock, the sequel of 2 Days in Paris, a popular film from a few years back. The screening starts at 4pm and free tickets are distributed at HYY's Services Office from 10am onwards on 19 Nov. There is a limited number of seats!

PÖLY's table hockey tournament. Academic table hockey association PÖLY's super league is played in Mannerheim Hall in the New Student House from 6pm onwards. Registration to the games ends at the venue at 6pm. In the honour of the anniversary weeks, participation is free for HYY's members (€3 for others). During the tournament, each player will play 15-20 table hockey games, each game lasts for 5 minutes. Further information: poly.poytajaakiekko.com.

Setenta's Latin Boat goes Havanna party. This time, Setenta association's traditional Latin Boat party takes place in Restaurant Havanna (Kaisaniemenkatu 2) at 8pm-4am. Come and enjoy the Latin rhythms and explore the Latin culture! Tickets €8 (includes coat check).

 

SATURDAY, 24 NOV

Open afterparty of Dilemma's 45th anniversary. Come and celebrate with the students of philosophy in the cosmic anniversary afterparty at Käärmeenpesä (Sörnäisten rantatie 33, 4th floor) from 11.30pm onwards. Dilemma is known for its bizarre parties, come and experience its vision of astral tripping. The party features Lamp Fall Drummers and DJ-duo Ramses II! SUNDAY, 25 NOV

MONDAY, 26 NOV

HYY's 144th anniversary at the Old Student House. The anniversary weeks will culminate with the prestigious yet hilarious HYY's 144th anniversary celebration at the Old Student House. The evening is celebrated with the academic dinner from 6.30pm onwards and all student union members are cordially welcome to participate. The price of the anniversary is €75 for HYY's members and €85 for others (non-alcoholic dinner option €65/75), and you can sign up until 15 Nov at www.hyy.fi/vuosijuhla. TUESDAY, 27 NOV

Film screening: Rust and bone. In the honour of the anniversary weeks, HYY offers its members two free screenings of recent French films at Kino Engel (Sofiankatu 4). The latter one is Jacques Audiard's Rust and Bone, acclaimed by critics and festival visitors, presenting the rough romance of Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts. The screening starts at 4pm and free tickets are distributed at HYY's Services Office from 10am onwards on 19 Nov. There is a limited number of seats!

Macondo's Who are you according to the Mayan calendar? event. Come to Think Corner (Aleksanterinkatu 7) at 12.15noon-2pm, join the students of Latin American Studies and take a look at the birthday-specific calendar glyph and your own birthday forecast based on the Mayan calendar!

 

WEDNESDAY, 28 NOV

Art for Us! event day at Ateneum. At the end of the anniversary weeks, Ateneum Art Museum hosts the fifth Art for Us! Event day at 10am-8pm. There is free admission with the student card to the museum and 52 Souls exhibition presenting symbolic landscape works of van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin and Kandinsky, among others. The programme includes exhibition presentations, coaster workshop, written poetry portraits painted personally by the writing group Tapiiri, Akademiska Sångföreningen's pop up quartet, UrbanApa's street dance jam session and student-friendly offers.
